Fly fishing for salmon in the North of England

In 2011 I made a trip up to the North of England and Southern Scotland to fish with a friend of mine, Andy Blyth. I thought I was a keen fisherman before I met Andy, but he is a fanatic – especially when it comes to catching salmon. He’s a great man to fish with – never loses his enthusiasm and always up for an early start and ‘one more cast’. Sometimes he gets a little over-excited, as you can hear in this video, but there were a few fish about, so you’ll have to forgive him!

We’ve fished on a number of different beats on the Tyne – including Chipchase, Chollerton, Hexham and Byfield, and we’ve had some kind of action in each one. We took a rod between us on Chipchase Riverhill, catching about ten between us for the season (not bad seeing as I was driving up from London fairly irregularly). We also had some terrific seatrout sport on Chollerton, fishing an upstream mepps close to the surface. I lost two very large trout, one of which was well over 5lbs.

Enjoy the video…

James Green About James Green

James Green loves nothing more than casting a fly in pursuit of salmon, seatrout or, when the opportunity arises, a tailing bonefish, tarpon or permit.
